The Application Process
- We do not accept observers during the months of May, June, or July due to processing our incoming and outgoing residents and fellows.
- Observerships cannot exceed 4 weeks.
- Please allow 4 weeks for us to review your application. Due to the competitive nature of our Observership program, we cannot guarantee placement.
- All requests for an Observership must come through an active member of our Medical Staff or Administration. This excludes Residents and Fellows.
- Applications must be received no less than 90 days in advance.
- The Medical Education Department does not initiate contact or request the observership. It is the responsibility of the applicant to find a sponsor. No independent requests without a sponsor will be considered.
Qualifications
Applicants must have one of the following qualifications to be eligible:
- Graduate of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- Graduate of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Graduate of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have received a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
What you CANNOT do
Observers CANNOT do the following while at any KH facility or affiliated department in accordance with the State Medical Board of Ohio:
- Cannot identify themselves as a physician
- Cannot perform histories or physical exams on patients
- Cannot review patient's records
- Cannot write in patient's records
* Observers must be accompanied by their sponsor while on any patient care floor or department at any KH facility or affiliated department.
Observership Checklist
You will need the following documents to upload to submit your application, so we recommend that you collect the following items before you begin your application below:
- STEP 2 CK / COMLEX Level 2 CE results
- ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
- Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Immunization Records Required by KH Employee Health:
- Baseline TB screening — Using a two-step TB skin test (TST) or a single blood assay for M. Tuberculosis (BAMT) to test for infection with M. Tuberculosis within the last twelve (12) months.
- Influenza — Vaccination is mandatory for all Observers.
- Rubella (German measles) — Documentation is required of one Rubella vaccination after the first birthday, or a positive Rubella Titer. Blood work is drawn in absence of documentation. The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccination is mandatory for a negative titer.
- Rubeola (10-day measles) — Documentation is required of a positive titer or 2 Rubeola vaccinations after the first birthday. Blood work is drawn in absence of documentation. 2 MMR vaccinations are required for a negative titer.
- Mumps — Documentation of two MMR vaccines or a positive mumps titer. Blood work is drawn in absence of documentation. Two MMR vaccinations are required for a negative titer.
- Varicella (Chickenpox) — Documentation of two varicella vaccines or a positive varicella titer. Blood work is drawn in absence of documentation. 2 varicella vaccines are required for a negative titer.
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis (Tdap) — Documentation of a one-time dose is recommended for all Observers.
- Hepatitis B — Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all Observers. A signed declination is required for those Observers that do not desire the vaccine.
